Aha Moment Monday
I was learning about a new friend’s company and how he incentivizes his team.
Like many, he sets targets then gives the team the tools to achieve the targets.
When they meet their targets they receive a commission or gift.
I started to wonder if the targets were something to reach for or if they represented a ceiling.
I know goals are meant to stretch you but I wonder if sometimes we set goals we know we can achieve then stop when we achieve them.
Do the goals accurately reflect the potential?
What if the targets and incentives were based on behaviour as opposed to results?
What if, rather than focusing on achieving a level of sales, the focus was on the learning, collaboration and methodology to create the sales?
What if the incentives were based on daily commitments to things like reading a chapter of a sales manual, locating then posting something educational on social media, writing a thank-you card, gathering feedback on a presentation, or joining the walking club regardless of the weather? (Okay, so the last one is because I believe when we feel good we extend our best. Exercise does wonders!)
Would any of those things – including the unwavering commitment to the daily practice – require, to some extent, going out on a limb?

While it’s important to have a clear picture of what “success” looks like, take care that your goal isn’t inhibiting.
Decide on the attitude you need to embody and the activities you need to pursue then make a commitment.
